A call for a 12-month postdoctoral position (renewable for a second year) is open at Department of Engineering, University of Messina, in the Water Engineering Research Group led by Prf. Giuseppe T. Aronica.

The title of the research is The role of sustainable urban drainage systems (SUDS) in mitigating pluvial flood risk”.

The research grant is part of the project “Floods in cities: new INSights for integrating Pluvial floodIng into flood Risk maNaGement plans (INSPIRING)” funded under the PRIN 2020 Programme.

The research activity will be based on the analysis and development of methodologies, models and strategies that allow the sizing and integrated management of widespread solutions in the urban area such as low-impact technologies (SUDSs – sustainable urban drainage systems) on an urban scale. These methodologies will be studied through hydraulic/hydrological models developed through calculation codes such as EPA-SWMM 5 and InfoWorks in order to quantitatively evaluate the mitigation effects of pluvial floods connected to the adoption of these sustainable strategies.

In accordance with current community policies and, in particular, with the EU Flood Directive 2007/60, the INSPIRING research project will be aimed at the identification, performance analysis and numerical modelling of sustainable technologies and strategies that allow the mitigation of the risk of pluvial floods.

The activities will be conducted in the Department of Engineering at University of Messina in collaboration with University of Naples “Federico II”, the Polytechnic of Milan, the University of Rome “La Sapienza”, the University of Naples “Parthenope” and the University of Campania.

The deadline for application is 29th November 2023 at 12:00 Italian Time.
